Alcohol SBI Training for the Physician Assistant

3 CME for the Accreditation Counsel for Continuing Medical Education




This course has been designed for the physician assistant in the provision of alcohol screening, brief intervention (aSBI), and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for patients seen in the practice setting. The course includes alcohol SBI educational training, followed by a series of exposures to conducting an alcohol SBI encounter. Learners will:

  • Watch a recorded example of a SBI encounter
  • Conduct a SBI encounter with a virtual simulated patient using scripted options
  • Conduct their own live SBI encounter with a standardized patietn via videoconferencing

At the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Define alcohol screening and brief intervention
  • Identify patients who are at risk for alcohol use and meet the criteria for use of the aSBI intervention
  • Conduct alcohol screening and a brief intervention when indicated
