Alcohol SBI Training for the Physician Assistant
This course has been designed for the physician assistant in the provision of alcohol education and screening brief intervention referral and treatment (SBIRT) for patients seen in the practice setting. The course lessons include alcohol and SBIRT educational materials, followed by a series of three exposures to the SBIRT interview encounter. Participants will initially watch someone conduct a Brief Negotiated Interview (BNI), then conduct their first interview using scripted options, and lastly conduct their own BNI interview with a standardized patient (SP) within either a videoconferencing platform or the virtual world environment using an avatar as the SP.
At the completion of this course, the learner will:
- Be able to define what is Screening Brief Intervention Referral and Treatment (SBIRT) and the steps involved
- Be able to identify patients who are at risk for alcohol use and who meet the SBIRT criteria
- Be able to conduct the alcohol BNI with patients identified with a positive screen for alcohol use
