Alcohol SBI Training for the Healthcare Professional

Alcohol SBI Training for the Healthcare Professional

This course has been designed for the healthcare professional in the provision of alcohol education, screening, and brief intervention (SBI) sometimes also referred to as SBIRT when referral to treatment is included, in the practice setting. The course lessons include alcohol and SBI educational materials, followed by a series of two exposures to the SBI interview encounter. Participants will initially watch someone conduct an SBI, then conduct their first interview using scripted options in a guided brief intervention.

At the completion of this course, the learner will:

  • Be able to define Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBI or SBIRT) and the steps involved
  • Be able to identify patients who are at risk for alcohol use and who meet the SBIRT criteria
  • Be able to conduct the alcohol BNI with patients identified with a positive screen for alcohol use
